Spalted ambrosia maple wood has some of the most interesting and beautiful coloration, but it can also indicate intense decay throughout the majority of the wood. This particular piece of maple was very far-gone and required serious stabilization in order for the wood to hold together. Unlike a stain finish, which is normally applied to the surface of the finished piece, dye stabilization in punky, rotten wood penetrates different depths in the wood, following the path of least resistance depending on the density of the wood. This resulted in a unique “natural” looking coloration where the spalt lines sometimes separated the dyed wood from the natural colored wood. Given the fragile nature of the wood, I was afraid to make the walls of this bowl too thin, so this piece measures a sizeable 10.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall. This bowl is finished with a hard wax for durability and ease of maintenance.
