Manzanita Burl & Copper Patina Hybrid Vessel - YouTube Video Project
This piece is the culmination of weeks and months of testing copper patina effects on the natural edge of burl. I showed much of the process on my Patreon page, but the two side projects that preceded this YouTube video project have yet to be completed as of the time of this listing. In this piece, I used gilding adhesive to affix pure copper powder to the surface of the burl, and I applied an aging solution to trigger a patina effect in minutes/hours rather than waiting weeks/months for the natural process to occur. The effect is very dramatic with vivid blues and greens dominant with only a few veins of gold where the copper remained untouched. Once the patina was complete, the effect was locked in by sealing the surface of the burl before the deep epoxy pour. In order to avoid thermal cracking and overheating of the resin, I placed the pressure pot inside a refrigerator/freezer and held the temperature at 35-36 F for 11 days. This worked like a charm and the result is crystal clear resin! In the spirit of full transparency (ironically), the waterproof finish on this piece was extremely frustrating, and in the end it was not as flawless as I would have liked. When I showed this piece to family members, they thought the finish added to the coral-like effect, almost like an underwater ocean vibe. This piece is waterproofed with clear resin and measures approximately 11 inches tall and 10 inches wide.
