The inspiration for this piece came from the original chunk of black walnut, which arrived to my shop burnt on its natural edge, and I decided to increase the yield from the wood by cutting it in half and reorienting the natural edge to allow for a resin river. The resulting hollow form not only attempts to maximize the natural edge but also features a book-match or reverse book-match of sorts where you can see corresponding knots and grain patterns on opposite sides of the form. This is the first time I have attempted this concept, and I definitely want to try more of it. The green color choice for the resin was inspired by one of my customers who was torn between two different color schemes, and I wanted to test out one of them, hopefully not merely for my own benefit. This piece measures approximately 8.75 inches wide and 5.5 inches tall.
